Roofwork repair

Repair work on the roof structure at the See of Funchal was undertaken in order to preserve the valuable artistic elements of the carved cedarwood ceiling, while improving the roof’s perfomance.

Following site inspections carried out in May 2005 by DRAC and DGEMN technicians, two wooden structures were identified, the oldest forming part of the cedar-wood alfarje ceiling and a more recent, outer structure, made of chestnut wood. It was further verified that the wood from the original structure is generally in good condition, despite the somewhat degraded appearance (rotting) of part of the decorative wooden ceilings and some accumulation of dust. The wood used on the alfarje ceiling is carved and applied with finishing nails, while the chestnut structure appears to be in good condition, unlike the lining and battens, which are infested with wood termites.

The repair work mainly involved:
  • Removal and appropriate storage of existing tiles;
  • Cleaning and vacuuming of roof structures;
  • Application of insecticide on the outer surface of the alfarje ceilings and on roof structures;
  • Laying a new roof using roofing underlay, existing roof tiles and new Azores”-style aged tiles;
  • Masonry repair;
  • Treatment of terrace decks;
  • Chipping away the existing renderings and replacing these with limebased mortar;
  • Whitewashing.
  • Cleaning and vacuuming of roof structures.

  • Repair of masonry.

  • Window repair.
