ARCOS BRIDGE AND SECA BRIDGE
EP – Estradas de Portugal, E.P.E. – EN 261 – Rehabilitation of Engineering Structures
2008
The Arcos Bridge and Seca Bridge are located along the EN 261, near the village of Mimosa.
Intervention goal
In 2008, both bridges underwent significant repair and strengthening works. The reinforced concrete structures showed signs of deterioration due to rebar corrosion, the expansion joints were degraded, the bearing devices were corroded, and overall, the seismic resistance of the structures was inadequate. The project aimed to repair the damaged structures and carry out seismic retrofitting.
Steps and techniques used
The abutments and central pier of the Arcos Bridge were strengthened through the introduction of micro-piles and the application of structural reinforced shotcrete. New bearing devices capable of accommodating large displacements were installed. To accommodate the new expansion joints – adapted to the updated displacement tolerances – it was necessary to cut the bridge deck. Finally, the structures were protected with a high-performance cement-based coating.
