Recovery / Requalification of the Church and Convent
2015
The Church and Convent of São Francisco underwent significant rehabilitation, conservation, and restoration works. The intervention program for the entire complex, which includes the Chapel of Bones as an integral part, involved executing works across several specialties.
Steps and techniques of intervention
The less visible interventions included structural reinforcement and the complete replacement of the existing roofs and their drainage systems to eliminate the main causes of anomalies in the buildings.
The sewage drainage networks and water supply networks were also restructured. These interventions, more visible to the public, included repair and/or conservation of exterior plaster, interior ceilings and walls, stonework, stained glass, and mural painting in the church.
The depth of the intervention also covered the conservation and restoration of other integrated and movable artistic heritage, correction of lighting systems, electrical and telecommunications networks, as well as a new air conditioning system for the museological spaces.
The recent rediscovery of the old monks’ cells wing of the convent was also rehabilitated, including the replacement of the roof that previously existed, to highlight the architectural ensemble’s collection.
Due to the cultural and historical importance of the complex, the most appropriate rehabilitation and restoration techniques were employed, always aiming to protect this historical heritage and adapt it to its new functions, such as the creation of museological spaces.
Results
With the completion of the works in this architectural complex, visitors now benefit from a covered passage along the cloister, with the dual purpose of restoring the architectural value of the space and creating a reception and waiting area for visitor groups. Visitors can also admire the royal gallery overlooking the main chapel, fully rehabilitated, as well as the cloister and surrounding areas.
Additional information
Since the space is used simultaneously by devotees and visitors, a new accessibility and support services system was created for the complex to separate worship and liturgy routes from visitor circuits.
