The filtration battery of the Asseiceira Water Treatment Plant (WTP) targeted in this intervention consists of 24 filters, 16 of which belong to the plant's initial phase, commissioned in 1987, and the remaining 8 were added during an expansion phase that took place in the mid-1990s.

Intervention goal

The aim of the intervention was to improve the conservation status and overall quality of the filtration battery, ensuring compliance with functional requirements and extending the useful lifespan of this structure.

Steps and techniques

The project involved replacing the fixing system of the filter plates in filtration line No. 1 of the WTP. It also included repairs to the expansion joints of the filter plates and the internal reinforced concrete surfaces of the filters. Work began with the careful removal and layered storage of the filter media. The intervention continued with the supply and installation of new filter plates, replacement of tiled surfaces, supply and installation of new PVC piping, and replacement of filter nozzles. Finally, the filter media was reinstalled.

A structural chemical anchoring process was then carried out, along with joint treatment of the filter plates. Cracks in the reinforced concrete were treated by injecting epoxy resin. Concrete repair was executed using light pneumatic hammers for chipping, rebar cleaning, and application of thixotropic mortar.

Results

According to a statement from the project owner, "the works were carried out in accordance with best practices and were completed within the agreed timeframe, demonstrating the professionalism and competence of the company and its team".
