Walls of São Jorge Castle

Project for enhancement, restoration and cleaning of the castle's exterior retaining walls
1997
São Jorge Castle was built in a commanding position on the highest hill of Lisbon’s historic center, offering visitors one of the most beautiful views over the city and the Tagus River estuary. The fortification was constructed by the Moors in the mid-11th century.
Main works carried out
The proposed intervention comprised several components:
- Repair and conservation of the exterior retaining walls,
following cleaning and removal of invasive vegetation; - Removal and replacement of deteriorated plasters and damaged or detached mortar joints
- Replacement of handmade terracotta tiles;
- Reconstruction of sections of stone masonry;
- Roof repairs;
- Tree cutting and debris removal.
