This intervention concerned the renovation works of the warehouse located in Sacavém (Lisbon), owned by Edinfor. It was a renovation project aimed at recovering and repurposing the space to support the expansion of Edinfor’s Finishing services.

Steps and techniques used

Overall, the works involved the demolition of existing internal elements in the warehouses, such as masonry partitions, columns, beams, and slabs, retaining only those components essential for the structural integrity of the building, including the metal elements of the roof and the exterior walls.

The entire roofing system was removed. After cleaning the existing metal roofing elements and applying a specific primer for mixed surfaces followed by painting, a new roof was installed, respecting the original structural "shed" configuration. The floor was made of fiber-reinforced concrete and finished with hydraulic tiles. The pavement was executed in concrete reinforced with metal fibers and coated with hydraulic mosaic.

Further work included the repair of exterior walls, the repair or replacement of window and door frames and metalwork, and the construction of new masonry corresponding to three future independent functional areas.

Given the advanced deterioration and slenderness of the existing columns, it was necessary to reinforce them. The adopted solution involved inserting traditional load-bearing elements, increasing the column cross-section through the projection of concrete and embedding fiberglass between the layers of sprayed concrete.

Additional adaptation works were carried out to integrate with existing structures and ensure the building’s functionality:

• Increasing the height and width of openings to allow vehicle access into the warehouses for material unloading;
• Construction of foundation blocks to provide a base for future masonry walls that will divide interior spaces.
